If you want to know how to remove apps from iPhone totally or simply do not want the app to appear on the menu itself, you have come to the right place. This article will focus on the detailed steps on how to remove apps from iPhone.

How to remove apps from iPhone totally – deletion of application.

Deleting an application is pretty straight forward. It can be done in 3 easy steps:

1. On the screen itself, identify the application that you would like to delete from iPhone.

2. Next, tap on the application icon and hold it there for a few seconds. You will notice that the screen will start to “wiggle” and finally an “X” sign will appear on the application icon.

3. Tap on the “X’ sign and when asked whether to proceed, select “Delete”. That’s it. It is that simple.

One thing to note, you can only remove applications that you have installed, default applications that come with iPhone cannot be deleted from the device. Also bear in mind that if the deleted application remains in iTunes, it will be transferred back to iPhone the next time you do a sync. To avoid this, either remove the application from iTunes or configure iTunes not to sync all applications but only those that you want. You can do so by accessing the Application Tab of your iPhone icon within iTunes when it is connected to your PC or laptop and change the syncing options.

If you do not want certain default iPhone applications to appear on the menu, the next section will show you how to remove application the menu without deleting them from the device.

How to remove apps from iPhone menu.

In order to see only the set of applications you want, you can use another menu page. Slide your finger across the screen to the left and you will arrive on another menu. iPhone allows you to move applications between these pages so that you can customize which ones appear on the 1st page. Just move whatever you do not use to the 2nd or 3rd pages.

what if the app doesn't have an X ?

Is there no way to delete it? Moving it to another page seems dumb

If you are referring to Apps that are shipped with iPhone, those cannot be removed. However, if you jailbreak your phone, there are utilities to hide them. Again, if you have jailbroken your phone, the Apps you install from Cydia, etc will not have the X, they have to be removed from Cydia.

I do not recommend jailbreaking your phone though.

See above, onI Tunes you click on Applications under the heading LIBRARY, then you can simply right click and delete.

iPhone A1303 23 months ago

Hello guys,

I came across this post by trying to find an information about how to get rid of some apps I happened to download earlier, but no longer need them (one of them is facebook)

The thing is I am often reading around the Web that i need to press and hold any of the app icons and they are supposed to start shaking and even an X should also be seen by that time on the corner of the icons that are not the pre installed.

Well, none of those things happen with my iPhone and no matter how long i keep my finger on any of the icons on the screen, none of the icons are shaking or showing an X at all... I do not know why...

my iPhone model is A1303

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Thank you

iPhone A1303,

This is very peculiar. May be you can try to power off and on the iPhone and try again. The X should appear unless you have jailbroken your iPhone and are trying to remove an app that you installed from Cydia/Ice, etc. Those will have to be removed from Cydia/Ice.

iPhone A1303 23 months ago

Hi,

First off thanks for your prompt response. I know it is very odd situation ... I did power off and on, but the situation remains the same.. I am unable to remove the two apps I've been trying to get rid of for more than a month now.. one of the apps is facebook and the another one is zynga...no luck to date... I just downloaded them for the sake of trying my iphone out... I just bought it a couple of months ago....

I've downloaded them from the apple app store... and I must admit I have no idea what jailbroken and Cydia/Ice are...

Thank you for your help anyway, it is much appreciated..

Any chance your mobile service provider's customer service can help you?

I am not sure about your country but mine provide some sort of support.

You can try Apple service centre too if you have one in your locale.

This is a problem you need to resolve. If not, more and more apps will get installed without you being able to remove them and there is a limit as to the number of pages you can go for iPhone.

Sorry about the non-technical suggestion but I have never come across such a problem before.

One last thing you can do (if seeking support from Apple or service provider is out of reach), is to restore your iPhone firmware. That will wipe off everything and let you start from scratch.

iPhone A1303  23 months ago

Even though I am still unable to resolve my issue, many thanks for your willingness to help, as I said it is much appreciated...

I am from Europe, but currently traveling in Asia and I am for sure, going to ask my local ISP, where I bought the phone from, for any assistance or guidance in removing those unwanted apps. Just for the records, my current location is irrelevant towards the problem since I was unable to remove the apps even while I was back in Europe...

I guess I might also direct my question to the Apple, but it might take too long for them to react....

Your last suggestion sounds doable.., but I am not sure though how to restore my iPhone firmware in first place. The thing is I might also wipe off any custom preferences/settings currently applied/working on my phone that I may not be even aware of.

Thanks

Here is a new problem for you! I have a jailbroken phone, but when I hold the screen and get it wiggling, the 'x' appears but you cant press it. Therefore I cant delete any in this way? Has anyone else had this problem?

Whatzup 22 months ago

Have you tried turning your iPhone off and on and try again. Sometimes certain functionalities of my iPhone goes haywire and they were restored after I restarted the phone.

Hey 22 months ago

Hi I started to download an app on wifi but the connection dropped out, the app is to large to download with 3g service, so I figured I would just delete it. When I hold it in to shake it will start shaking but no x will appear on it, all the rest do as normal. I'm not sure what to do, my phone is not jail broken

Whatzup 22 months ago

I encounter the same problem before but could not remember how it was solved. Maybe u can try turning the phone off and on again or try to download the software again when you are on wifi.

clueless 21 months ago

so my iphone is jailbroken and i have not yet had a problem with it up until now.

i can't seem to delete anything (icons/apps) off of my home screen .. when i press my finger down, everything will shake but the delete X will not show up.

can u help please?

iphone-downloads profile image

iphone-downloads Hub Author 21 months ago

Hi clueless,

You mentioned that the X will not show up. Is it for all the apps or just certain apps? If it is just certains apps, maybe it is because they are installed using Cydia or Ice. These can only be uninstalled from Cydia or Ice.

If it happens to all the apps. I suggest you power your phone off and on again and try.

Hasn't actually unistalled it though.

The Facebook app was causing my iPhone to hang for 2 minutes whenever I commented or liked anything so I deleted it with the intention of reinstalling it.

I can't re install it though as the iTunes store tells me it's already installed even though it doesn't exist in any of my menus.

Any ideas?

Emma 14 months ago

Hey

I tried downloading facebook onto my iphone4 last night and it asked for my password to iTunes and I got halfway through my password and accidentally pressed ok and it came up with the facebook icon saying waiting and I got a notification saying password is wrong etc. But the facebook icon is still there saying waiting and I tried shaking the icons but it won't come up with an x on the facebook one.

I've tried turning it off and on again more than once and my apps store says facebooks already installed when obviously it's not... Help!
