Fixing 1604 iPhone Restore Error – How To Go About Fixing 1604 iPhone Restore Error

By

How to go about fixing 1604 iPhone restore error? Thousands of iPhone users are plagued with this issue. You may have also come across many articles asking you to do this and that but ended up with the same error. Well, I cannot guarantee that what is written here will help you in your quest to fixing 1604 iPhone restore error so do it at your own risk.

Steps to fixing 1604 iPhone restore error:

  1. There is no need to reinstall iTunes or whatever. Keep the same version that you have used to restore or backup previously.
  2. Make sure that iPhone is disconnected from your computer and that iTunes is closed.
  3. The following step of fixing 1604 iPhone restore error is Windows XP specific, if you are a Mac user, you may have to locate the folders yourselves as I am not sure: Go to folder C:\Documents and Settings\<username you use to login to windows>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates. You will see one or more files. Cut and paste them somewhere else. Do not delete them in case the steps does not work for you, you can still copy them back to the folder. You can find out your username by doing a Ctrl-Alt-Del. If somehow you cannot find the folder, you are probably in the wrong user directory.
  4. Launch iTunes and put your iPhone in recovery mode. Refer to this article on Unable To Restore iPhone on how to do put iPhone in recovery mode.
  5. Proceed with restore and iTunes will download the update online. If you are downgrading to a lower version, do step 3 and leaving only the firmware file that you want to downgrade to. Double click on the file and iTunes will begin the restore.

Kindly note that restoring iPhone clears ALL personal data. In this case you probably have no choice due to the error. I hope this article has been of help to those in the mist of fixing 1604 iPhone restore error. Again, this make not work for all.

Didn't work for me, I still get the 1604 error. Thanks anyway, I'll keep looking!

Theres nothing in my aplacation data folder

iphone-downloads 2 years ago

Hi Pete,

You mentioned that there is nothing inside the application data folder, that is strange because every account should have something inside that folder. I suspect you may be looking at the wrong user folder or that the application folder information is hidden.

alpha 2 years ago

My phone was origininally setup with a Mac, but I've been a Windows user since that original setup. When I tried to upgrade to ver 3, I got the 1604 message. Nothing on any forum or Youtube videos helped, except for the advice to try the upgrade on another machine with iTunes. I tried it on a Mac & it recognized it & worked, but had to upgrade to ver 3 on the Mac. No more 1604. When I connected back to the PC, I had to rename the device to it's PC name (my iPhone), and do a restore. Freaked me out, but if the iPhone is going to be so unpredictable & freaky, may as well run it in jailbreak mode (another topic...)

iphone-downloads 2 years ago

alpha,

I guess the iTunes in Mac and iTunes in Windows may not interface in the iPhone in the same way hence your problem. I am not a Mac User so I never experience this before. However, from what you describe, I believe the problem should not appear if you stick to using Windows for future operations and sync.

@4051kanobi 2 years ago

hey - these errors (1604, 1600, 21, etc..) are all related to a ipsw incompatibility - try recreating the new ipsw with 1000mb in the boot partition - this has worked on every problematic iphone i've seen yet 2.1-3.0also - on 3.0 you can try 666mb for an extra bonus from the dev-team guys

Tom 2 years ago

Hi Guys,

I had the same 'stuck in recovery mode' problem.

Fixed my 1604 by simply manually stopping and re-starting the mobile device service (with the phone plugged in however not sure if it makes a difference).

Once I started it up again, opened itunes (you may have to do this a few times to get it to recognise the phone) and the restore worked perfectly.

Hope this helps someone.

Thanks for sharing Tom. People like you really sets a good example for all of us through your generosity :).

Julio Nemer 2 years ago

THE PROBLEM IS REALLY EASY TO FIX WITH THIS METHOD, I HAVE TRIED SEVERAL TIMES WITH DIFFERENT ITOUCHES/IPHONES AND IT REALLY WORKED.....SO HERE IT GOES:

THE FIRST THING YOU NEED TO DO IS PUT YOUR IPHONE/ITOUCH IN DFU MODE, IF YOU DONT KNOW HOW TO DO IT FOLLOW THIS 4 STEPS QUICKLY:

1. TURN YOUR IPHONE/ITOUCH OFF

2. PRESS HOME AND POWER BUTTON FOR 10 SECONDS

3. RELEASE POWER BUTTON BUT KEEP PRESSING HOME BUTTON FOR ANOTHER 10 SECONDS

4. RELEASE POWER BUTTON

NOW YOUR IPHONE/ITOUCH SHOULD BE IN DFU MODE, THEN OPEN ITUNES (IF ITUNES WAS RUNNING CLOSE IT AND OPEN IT AGAIN)

AFTER THAT YOU SHOULD GET A POPOU TELLING YOU TAHT YOU HAVE TO RESTORE YOUR IPOD CLIK ON THE RESTORE BUTTON THEN WAIT FOR A COUPLE OF SECONDS UNTIL YOUR IPHONE/ITOUCH SCREEN TURNS WHITE, WHEN YOUR SCREEN IS WHITE CLICK CTRL+ALT+SUPR AND KILL ITUNES.EXE

YOUR IPOD SCREEN WILL STILL BE WHITE, DONT WORRY....

OPEN ITUNES AGAIN AND CLICK ON THE RESTORE BUTTON AGAIN, AND JUST WAIT UNTIL IS RESTORED....YOUR IPHONE/ITOUCH NOW WILL BE FIXED AND YOU WON´T GET THE 1604 ERROR, THIS METHOD REALLY WORKS AND ITS REALLY EASY TO LEARN IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WRITE ME TO NEMERSITO@GMAIL.COM AND I WILL HELP YOU THROUGH THE PROCESS......

Hi Guys, thanks so much for all your tips, so frustrating to see this type of thing happening with iphone! I thought the premium price on apple products was meant to mean they work! I had white screen of death before and got a replacement (thankfully in warenty) and now this. I have access to a Macbook and so I was able to do a restore on that instead of the xp machine where i was having the issues! Sometimes its best to just go with the flow, apple look after there own devices better than they look after interportability! Microsft like apple!

Brooke 2 years ago

Seriously

Joe 2 years ago

Worked like a charm, thank you

Guv 2 years ago

I seriously thought I'd messed up completely when my ipod touch G1 failed to sync and ended up having to dfu and then the 1604 error.

I tried the various examples above. Everything failed.

Then I swapped over the cable I was using. Almost immediately I could see it was going to work. I had been using a cheapo cable.... but obviously it needs a genuine apple cable. My ipod is now returned to normal working status.

So before all else.... MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING A PUCKER APPLE IPOD CABLE.

Boweezie 2 years ago

Super thanks to iphone-downloads and Julio Nemar for all your help and suggestions. I combined both methods and it worked! :)

1. Used a different usb cable

2. Moved the files iphone-downloads told us to move

3. Used J. Nemars way

Once again thanks a lot guys!! :)

RJ 23 months ago

Another success, thanks to iphone-downloads and Julio Nemar. Here's what I did:

1. Used a different usb cable

2. Removed all the files you told us to and replaced them with ONLY the current iphone software that I manually downloaded.

3. Then used J. Nemars way (when he says "white" screen he really means black, it's just a really bad black, basically it's when you phone goes blank)

Once again thanks a lot guys!! :)

Carey 23 months ago

Okay, I didn't do the file thing. I only did the J nemars way, and now my phone is restored, however, I can't connect to the itunes store to complete it, and finish. I can't therefore back it up from backup files. What do I do???

Max 23 months ago

Thanks Julio Nemer! It worked Perfectly!

johnny 23 months ago

J Nemar u r a life saver!!!!

Jon 23 months ago

Julio Nemar! Amazing. I was crying about to give up and I tried your solution. I have a call back from Apple support placed and a appt with the "genius" bar. But I tried your solution and after HOURS of trying I can tell it's working. I get the Apple screen with the installation meter which I never got at all. Plus iTunes is confirming Restoring iPhone software.

One thing, my 3G screen didn't really turn white, it's more an illuminated black, but no less this worked. Apple should have this solution on their site.

Great!

thanks again

jamie 22 months ago

Julio Nemer - Worked perfectly - Thanks! One other thing I found, you need a lot of C:\ drive space for all the downloading and decompression... I was short of space to start with and thats where all the problems began. Freed up around a gig to get it to work.

Jon 22 months ago

This is the same Jon that posted a while back when iOS4 came out. Now iOS4.1 is out and the same problem except now it's Error 1602. I am going to try the same fix Julio Nemer suggested and see what's what. Apple: WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?

Jon 22 months ago

Julio Nemer, once again, a genius. I tried the restore and kill once, but for some reason the first time I let it keep restoring then got the 1604 error (not the original 1602 I first got tonight). The second time I did the KILL well after the screen flashed white/black and it started to do the proper install and restore. I can't believe I've read blogs where people have spent $200 with Apple to fix it with no results and a dead iPhone. Julio's fix is the only one that works.

Al Young 22 months ago

Well done Julio Nemer...I used your advice and noticed the S/W bar across the Iphone 3GS. Didn't do that before and now I'm a happy man. Not impressed with Apple's help files that didn't work.

and i also have tried it by moving the files from the folders but all in vain,

any help?

Tom M. 21 months ago

Julio's fix worked great for the 1604 error. Unfortunately, I wasted 4 hours before I found his solution. Thanks for the trouble Apple. Try it - it works. 30 July 2010 By the way, do CTRL+ALT+DEL.

Sergio 21 months ago

My itunes refuses to register that the iphone is there and ready to be restored in DFU mode. Even though my computer recognizes the iphone. Itunes only shows the restore message during a regular start up of the iphone where the screen isn't all black. This is beyond frustrating. It's great other people found a solution here but I'm still SOL.

Harris 21 months ago

This iPhone doesn't turn to 'illuminated black' or white screen when I start the restore process. It merely stays on the 'Recovery Mode' screen (the USB plug pointing at the iTunes logo). Not sure what can be done...I'm using original (and quite new) Apple USB cable and have removed the Restore file found in the directory. Will give it another go, but I'm thinkin this thing is bricked. (Good riddance)

Zac 21 months ago

Error 1604: This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, uninstalling and reinstalling USB ports, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections, device not recognized properly, computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device). If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the USB 30-pin dock-connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.

If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:

1. Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.

2. Restore and wait for error 1604.

3. When prompted, click OK.

4. Close and re-open iTunes while iPhone remains connected.

5. iPhone should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.

6. Try to restore again.

PROBLEM: iPhone stuck in Recovery Mode after attempting to install the newest software update. Windows XP Operating System Troubleshooting.

SOLUTION:

Step 1 - Change USB ports and follow J. Nemar's solution.

Step 2 - For some of you, J. Nemar's Solution was enough to fix your error. Well bully for you. For the rest of us, iTunes does not recognize that an iPhone is connected when we've launched it for the 2nd time.

Step 3 - Your iPhone should still be in the DFU mode, black illuminated screen. Open your Device Manager (Right click "My Computer", select properties, Hardware tab, and click Device Manager). Hit the View tab and make sure "devices by connection" is selected. Scroll down and locate "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver".

These next steps are directly from Apple troubleshoot for XP:

1. Right-click Apple Mobile Device USB Driver and choose Update Driver from the shortcut menu.

2. If asked to connect to Windows Update to search for software, choose "No, not this time" and click Next.

3. Choose "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.

4. Choose "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install" and click Next.

5. Click the Have Disk button. In the "Install from Disk" dialog, click the Browse button.

6. Use this window to navigate to the following folder: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers.

7. Double-click the usbaapl file, which is listed in this folder. Click OK on the "Install from Disk" dialog.

8. Click Next and finish the driver installation steps. Open iTunes to verify that the device is recognized properly, and continue restoring your device.

Step 4 - When you've finished updating the driver, your iTunes should already be open, and it will recognize your iPhone. It will ask to restore and you say yes and this time it will actually work :)

Step 5 - Take a deep breath and breathe a sigh of relief, soon you'll have your iPhone back!

I hope this helps everyone on Windows XP who ran into this problem like me! And remember, if you find a better method or something that needed to be tweaked for you, UPLOAD IT! Everyones got a different setup and the more info on these problems the better!

Shelly G 16 months ago

All,

I'm on WinXP...I've been trying to solve this error ever since the 1st time I tried to update my wife's Iphone 3G OS to the 3.0 OS. Every single damn time I tried to update her OS, it would hang, EVERY TIME, until finally timing out with a 1604 error. I TRIED EVERYTHING: reinstalling my usb drivers, reinstalling Itunes, making a new user and trying there, trying every single damn usb port, and always always always the same thing: the update hangs and then times out with the 1604, or even 1601, 1603, 160x whatever!

Then, I got the Iphone 3GS. And when Itunes patched that SMS hack, I thought "eh no biggie, should be no problem for me". I was dead wrong. Same thing for me!!!! I bricked my brand new Iphone 3 GS!!!! And worst part: When I tried to reinstall the original 3.0 OS, SAME THING, so I couldn't resurrect my Iphone at all!

Until...

Found this on another site and it helped when the others didnt...

"I found a seemingly vague small post from 1 million google searches saying "Hey, if it hangs, before it goes to the 1604 error, just simply bring up your Task Manager and close the Itunes process...then, relaunch Itunes, it should see your Iphone, go through the restore again and wallah, it should work".

I first got message 2002 and then 1604. Solution? I downloaded itunes on another computer and restored my phone. It found it and works fine! Make sure to use a back usb port, as the front are usually not as strong. Hope this has helped!

well guys i have an iphone 3g 8gb

it had the jailbraik but with the multitask i created that

ipsw with snowbreeze and there was no problem with a 800mb partition thanks to the

iReb but now that i created a new ipsw with no multitask with the same 800mb partition and there seemed to be a problem first the 21 error pops out and then the 1604 :(

what can i do besides creating the new ipsw with a 1000mb partition?

Aamer 16 months ago

Hi guys,

I completed a Jailbreak with redsnow0.9.6b4 on my Iphone 3GS 16gb.. All went well until it crashed 2 days after completed jail break after some time spent on the Cydia app. The jailbreak wasn't permanent if the phone was rebooted. I had to use redsnow to reboot each time. Which worked okay.....

Until earlier today when it froze!! :( The phone would not go into DFU mode or respond. I looked around everywhere and couldnt get help until i read 'Iphone-downloads' and 'Julio Nemer' advice.

For errors 1604 (Itunes cant restore device) and freezing on apple logo or(pineapple logo for jailbreakers) all you need to do is navigate to -

Windows -

C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates delete the iPhone Restore.ipsw - my iphone is on 4.2.1 so mines looks like - iPhone2,1_4.2.1_8C148a_Restore.ipsw in any case delete this.

Put phone into DFU mode (See google for instructions) if you're having problems with this keep rying eventually it will go into DFU mode.

Start Itunes 10 and connect cable. if you have a previous version of itunes upgrade to version 10.

You will get a message telling you that the Iphone is in DFU mode and requires a full restore click okay.

terms and conditions should appear. click ok. Now you should see Itunes downloading the latest firmware from scratch (not an update the full package) the most recent firmware is 4.2.1 around 90mb.

Once done the Itunes should start preparing the iphone for a fresh firmware install.

THIS MAY NOT HAPPEN ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS ENTER DFU MODE AGAIN AND IT WORKS 100%

Now you should definatley have an Apple icon with a status bar underneith. DONT WORRY IF THE BAR DOESN'T MOVE ALLOW 5 MINS.

Let the phone do the rest. As usual when the firmware is sorted it will back up your files once you confirm you want to do this.

The phone is now as new in working order!!!

If you still get error 1604 follow 'Julio Nemer' advice see previous comments.

A special shout out to 'Iphone-downloads' and 'Julio Nemer' these guys are nothing short of genius!!

PS anyone looking to jailbreak 4.2.1 although redsnow can do this it's unstable and only at the BETA stages. The best idea is to downgrade firmware to 4.0 and use a stable jailbreak. Any advice from experts on this issue will be appreciated.

Thanks ALL

I swear, it's like they did this shit intentionally. FUCK YOU, APPLE !

White screen is a good indication it works. But it didn't show up until I rebooted the PC (iPod still in DFU, still connected to the computer). Probably because I followed Mike Symons post on re-installing the Apple Mobile Device driver. I also restarted the Apple Mobile Device process SEVERAL TIMES from Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services (first one on the list).

I honestly don't remember all the steps. Must've went from error 11 to error 2005 and back and forth. Check out "C:\Documents and Settings\_your_user_name_\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Updater Logs". :) Mine reached 25 restore attempts. 26th was the lucky number.

**************

OK I FIGURED THIS OUT, BY ACCIDENT...No holding buttons, no jailbreaking, nothing.

It's 1 retarded simple step that just has to be done at the right time.

My situation: iPod 4th gen 32 gig running on WIN XP. I wanted to upgrade my firmware...first I got the 1602 error, then the 1604.

This is the key. As soon as you get the 1604 ERROR (my iPod screen was black at this point), just hit OK. THE KEY STEP IS TO CTRL+ALT+DEL and kill Itunes.exe. Don't unplug, don't do a damn thing but kill Itunes.exe.

As soon as you restart Itunes, you will be told you need to restore and your restore will proceed with no hiccups.

Seriously, it's that easy.

MrPete 14 months ago

Just had that problem with my iphone 4 upgrading to ios 4.3 with win XP. Closing down itunes with ctrl-alt-delete was the only thing that work

Thanks apple_eats_poo

OMG this was such a life saver for me. i was on the computer for hours and tried everything and nothing worked. BTW this also works for an ipod touch (which is what i had), i just went to "ipod software updates" instead of iphone updates. thank you so much

apple_eats_poo 14 months ago

Again...

There are no steps needed...as soon as you get the 1604 ERROR (my iPod screen was black at this point), just hit OK and accept the error.

After the error window closes...THE KEY STEP IS TO CTRL+ALT+DEL and kill Itunes.exe. Don't unplug your iPod/iPhone, don't do a damn thing but kill Itunes.exe.

Leaving your device plugged in, restart iTunes. As soon as you restart Itunes, you will be told you need to restore and you will be able to restore with no hiccups.

Why this works...I have no idea but it works everytime. Seriously, it's that easy.

Thanks guys. You're brilliant! Apple however....

iphone-downloads 13 months ago

Ok guys, I just want to share my experience here upgrading my iPhone from iOS 4.0 to 4.3.1.

I was using Windows 7 and I did an upgrade from iTunes (version 10.2.1.1 - latest at the time of writing) and after all the processes are done I was shown an error (-1). After that, my iPhone goes into "limbo" and was in recovery mode. (Thank God I backed up my photos and contacts before that).

I went on to try to recover the iPhone with no positive result even after doing all those DFU/kill itunes stuff. However, different errors (34xx, etc) just kept poping up half way during restore. Finally I gave up and went home.

That night, I used my home laptop running on XP and tried again using the same iTunes version and did a restore. At first the recovery process seem to be running fine until towards the end when the progress just stopped. Then I noticed an alert from my ZoneAlarm firewall software that a certain process (I can't remember whether it is Bonjour or DifX or mobile something) is trying to access the internet. I guessed it was a process used by iTunes so allowed it go through and the recovery process was done and my phone was alive again even though I lost all data.

In conclusion, in my case, I am pretty sure that the reason I was not able to recover on my Widnows 7 station was also due to the firewall software running on it. And the reason the firewall did not prompt me was probably because I set it to always deny the process that iTunes need to access the internet. So all these happened in the background without my knowledge and I kept going around in circles.

So to all of you out there who have tried everything that is said on this hub to recover your iPhone without success, maybe you should try to disable your firewall software and try again.

Cheers.

And Apple, please improve your interface so as to give your users better information when they are met with problems. It will go a long way for customer service. Peace.

Andy 13 months ago

Didn't work for me. But I used a combination of things>

First, I created a guest user on my pc (windows) and then secondly I removed the SIMM card.

After these two steps, I connected the iPhone to my pc and the restore worked and software was upgraded as well.

You may then log off the guest user or log in to your original user account and your iPhone would backup to all your settings.

Good luck!

Another solution is to turn the anti-virus and firewall off. Problem may be caused just by firewall as iphone-downloads said. I've expirienced exactly the same. Firewall off and done!

iphone-downloads, thanks a lot!

Dave 11 months ago

Thank you so so so so so soooo much to the guys on this board for the advice. Soon as I followed it I've managed to get beyond the dreaded 1604...

As a little extra information, I'd hazard a guess that the ipad / ipod / iphone is getting stuck in a bad state. Allowing itunes to shut down "gracefully" after a failure seems to put the device back into this state.

Killing it via task manager / process explorer stops itunes from putting it back in a bad way. If you keep an eye out on C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPad Updater Logs\ and watch the latest file while it's attempting to restore. As soon as you see something similar to the following few lines you can kill off the itunes process tree.

2011-06-05 12:18:01.968 [1712:f78]: : operation 4 progress -1

2011-06-05 12:18:02.062 [1712:f78]: bootstrapping restore with iBEC

2011-06-05 12:18:02.062 [1712:f78]: : operation 31 progress -1

How to go about fixing 1604 iPhone restore error? Thousands of iPhone users are plagued with this issue. You may have also come across many articles asking you to do this and that but ended up with the same error. Well, I cannot guarantee that what is written here will help you in your quest to fixing 1604 iPhone restore error so do it at your own risk.

Steps to fixing 1604 iPhone restore error:

There is no need to reinstall iTunes or whatever. Keep the same version that you have used to restore or backup previously.

Make sure that iPhone is disconnected from your computer and that iTunes is closed.

The following step of fixing 1604 iPhone restore error is Windows XP specific, if you are a Mac user, you may have to locate the folders yourselves as I am not sure: Go to folder C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates. You will see one or more files. Cut and paste them somewhere else. Do not delete them in case the steps does not work for you, you can still copy them back to the folder. You can find out your username by doing a Ctrl-Alt-Del. If somehow you cannot find the folder, you are probably in the wrong user directory.

Launch iTunes and put your iPhone in recovery mode. Refer to this article on Unable To Restore iPhone on how to do put iPhone in recovery mode.

I'm the same guy that has problems with both 1602 and 1604 with my old iPhone 3G. I got a 32G iPhone 4 about 5 months ago. I don't sync it all that often so tonight I went to do this and installed the newest OS 4.whatever. After the lengthy download and install and backup process, here comes the 1602 error AGAIN on my newer phone. Well, I went with Julio's fix again, and it's working. I cannot believe Apple still hasn't fixed this.

What worked for me was downloading redsnow, and then putting the phone into pwned DFU mode, then using itunes to upload the IPSW file.

How about if you're getting the 1604 error on a Mac? Here's what I've tried: Deleting other ipsw's, closing itunes after the error and re-opening, using 1000mb for the partition, and using a different USB port

lame 6 months ago

pretty lame answer imo. Clearing out 1 folder isn't going to fix the plethora of 160x problems. For me, the folder was already empty anyway

wessam 6 months ago

i did this process but the i tunes didn't recognize the i phone after i press ok

Grateful 6 months ago

Thank you Julio Nemer, your tips really worked for me!

Earlier I had tried about 6 times without success, keep getting error 1604 or 1601.

Then I ensured the following:

1. freed up space in c:\

2. changed USB port

3. followed Julio's steps (and yes, your "white" screen is my "black" screen" wink.

Then Bravo!

Thanks for all who have contributed.

same problem. Tried for 8 hours failed. Used Pwnage tool and created custom ipsw. Itunes gave all kind of errors. Decided to uninstal the itunes and rectified hosts file. Restored successfully to 4.3.3.

Anyone fed up can try this sequence. All the best and thanks for everybody's guidance in the net.

I have window's 7. The is what I did. I copied the text.

C:\Documents and Settings\(username you use to login to windows)\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates. I then put it in the SEARCH box. I exchanged my login name for that line and did a search. It brought up the location for me. I created a folder called "UPDATES" and moved all the files into that, basically leaving them in the same location. Then, I opened iTunes and connected my iPhone, it worked. Hope that helped anyone who was having trouble. :D

Warren 4 months ago

I tried apple eats poo method and didn't work either, of course with all this i'm using tinyumbrella as my i-phone is jailbroken, and all this procedure is to remove it, as it slows it down way too much. i've also checked the files in my usewr account but found it empty, and if i don't use the tiny umbrella i get error 3194.

I've been on this for hours now.

I got stuck in this error madness after itunes told me my ipod needeed to restored because the contents could not be read. i attempted to restore only to get stuck at the Preparing contents of the ipod loading bar and ended up with the error 1604. after trying all the suggestions here I ended up with error 21. I thought my ipod was toast. then i had a crazy idea to try to jailbreak it which i did with the newest version of redsnow. low and behold IT WORKED after a week thinking my ipod was bricked, it is now up and running, AND jailbroken :D

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes

iPodDevices.xml - move/delete (maybe itunes prefs file as well)

Worked for me with an iphone 3GS stuck in recovery mode while trying to update to 5.1.

I'm trying to upgrade my iphone4 (4.3.3) to ios5.0.1 using redsnow 0.9.10b4 and snowbreeze (preserve baseband), but it keeps error 1601 and 1602 randomly. Before that, i got 3194; i passed it by editing host file (adding 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com). Whenever i put my idevice to Recovery mode (iTune logo), error 1904 appear. Whenever my phone is in DFU mode, 1600 appear. But when i pwned it to DFU (using redsnow, iReb), 1602 or 1601 appear. I alr tried many solution from other blog (such as using iReb, uninstall and reinstall latest iTunes, change USB port) and also follow Jolio's (killing itunes during "prepare iphone for restore"), still not work. HELP!!!

Note: my iphone4 was jailbroken and use Gavey sim to unlock. Now i can't see my ios4 screen back :(
